EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is an extensively studied protocol for treating trauma. It is a dual awareness way of engaging old problems (traumas). A little like a fire fighter working a wild fire when he realizes it is wise to keep one foot in the "black." Dealing with and within the trauma while keeping one foot in a safe-place to enable the ability to tolerate bad memories while fluidly reprocessing the old memory. A key of treating trauma is to activate the trauma without overwhelming the client. Then desensitizing the trauma by mild to moderate exposure. The final step is unique to EMDR and is required for long-term relief; reprocessing. Reprocessing occurs naturally during EMDR and can be considered an insight or emotional break-through. Research shows when the trauma is activated and reprocessing occurs within a few minutes the memory strands in the brain weave together and the two events or memories fire together, changing the meaning of the original trauma and leaving a new pathway of insight, meaning, and recovery.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a standard of treatment. It is the foundation of most treatment protocols. The focus is on thinking (cognitive) errors and things we do (behaviors) that make habits. It is based on the premise that we are what we think and we become what we do. CBT includes guided  imagery - a form of hypnosis, desensitization of traumatic memories and scary ones as well, creating new thinking patterns and habits.

Traumas can be treated using CBT, but research shows that if the old memory is not modified (reprocessed) it will eventually return to its old way of existing. That said, CBT is wonderful for treating anxiety and depression, substance abuse, and a variety of learned and other conditions.
